The first vehicle was built by the brothers Spencer and Maurice Wilks for British car company Rover in 1948. The jeep-like rural vehicle was inspired by the original US Army Jeep and intended for use in the British countryside. It featured a utilitarian design which included short wheelbase, true 4-wheel-drive, and an aluminum body. The Land Rover became the primary choice for military, emergency services and agriculture work.
